GRAND BLANC, MI – Seven weeks of play with the five-team Punk Rock Softball League culminated in a 12-11 win for the Buckham Alley Bruisers Sunday afternoon at Creasey Bicentennial Park in Grand Blanc.
Tattoos and friendly trash talking created the collective atmosphere.
The Bruisers went undefeated throughout their season, 10-0, and faced Friends Making Friends and Friends, who held a 6-4 record, in the championship game.
The other teams included the Grand Blanc Pissants, the Clam Dandies and the Flint Riverdogs.
“It grew from 20 people to 120 people in about three days,” said Maggie Warren, 19, of Flint, with Friends Making Friends and Friends.
This is the league’s first year, but organizers hope to continue and grow the league next year.
Originally, a group of friends bound through musical endeavors began tossing a softball around one night. Then the idea of a league sprang up and the group ran with it, coordinating games through a Facebook page.
“Basically, most of us haven’t spent this much time outdoors in five years,” joked Jack Schmier, 27, of Flint, with Making Friends and Friends.
Most players at the championship game said they heard about the league through word of mouth, and that the people on their team are the people they hang out with.
“It’s kind of a tightknit group,” said Bruiser Jared DeVries, 26, of Flint. “It’s just some friendly competition between friends. If you don’t have your friends and high fives, then what have you got?”
Bruiser Eleah Tucker, 26, of Flint, said she used to play as a kid and then on church leagues after high school, but that Punk Rock Softball was a lot more fun.
“I’m fine with (losing),” said third baseman Nick Mayberry, 29, of Flint, who was supported by his wife Emma and three-year-old son, Maddox. “It was a great time.”
After the game, the Bruisers sprayed each other with champagne and members of Making Friends with Friends ran through their homemade paper banner.
The teams were awarded mismatched trophies purchased from Salvation Army and took group pictures together.
As per tradition on Sundays, the game was followed by a trip to White Horse Tavern in Flint for pizza.
Nearly everyone knows each other either directly or indirectly through the Local. This is the kind of community we’ve built and established in Flint. I can’t think of any other music venue in the world that has the same effect in regard to building such a large group of people dedicated to building lasting ties in a community. When people asked me why I would want to move back to Flint, I would cite examples such as this. Punk Rock Softball was the best way to spend Sundays this summer. Congrats to the Bruisers for their well-played season (though some of us question the stacking of their lineup) and championship game!
Can’t wait for next season!

Man, last night was great. Thanks so much to everyone who paid to get in at the door, The Swellers, Making Friends, Pentimento, Midwest, Vagabond, everyone who helped keep an eye on things, volunteered to help the show run smoothly, and any
We passed out over 1,000 paper flyers, we drummed the message into everyone via social media, we were mentioned on AltPress.com, we had a feature on PropertyofZack.com, we had local TV coverage, we had an MLive.com article, we also had an article in the Flint Journal, and we continued to work hard to promote it in any way possible.
We brought our A-game for last night and it paid off. We sold the show out within 30 minutes of the door being open. We’re super sorry to those we had to turn away. If we don’t adhere to our capacity it means we can’t do what we do. In the future, whenever we post online, pre-sale tickets, MAKE SURE to buy them because if we are going through the trouble of doing so, we’re expecting the show to sellout. So always plan accordingly. Also, in the future, like we did last night, we’ll start a list of people who were turned down and if people leave, we’ll get you inside.
Seeing everyone come out, old faces and new faces, having so much fun, watching and supporting bands they haven’t seen before, being a part of this COMMUNITY, is the reason why we do what we do. In fall of 2009, I moved away to Austin, TX, thinking I would never live in Michigan again. I returned in August of 2011 to take care of my sick mother who had a bone marrow transplant, upon being approached to take up the role as club manager of the Flint Local 432, I flew down to Texas a few weeks later, packed up all my things, and drove a very uncomfortable moving truck nearly 2,000 miles. I had no paying job lined-up, no real plan other than that I knew I would be at the Local again as it re-opened. Nights like last night are the reason I moved back to Michigan without any hesitation. I’m a lucky man to be a part of something so great. Nights like last night are the reason people cared and continue to care about the Local.
Thank you everyone for being a part of this music scene and making it one of the most unique and positive communities I’ve ever experienced. It’s truly a privilege to do what I do.
Let’s keep this ball rolling, come out again tonight if you don’t have plans, Empty Orchestra is back from tour, let’s give them a warm welcome home.
Thanks again, without any of you this wouldn’t be possible. As members of this community, you are what makes the Local special. Together we can build something positive for this struggling city, by no means are we slowing down.
See you tonight.

If you haven’t heard already, The Swellers have been a band for 10 years this summer. It feels like just yesterday we played our first ever show, consisting of Misfits, Ramones, and Weezer covers and three original songs. We were 14 and 15 years old.
To commemorate beginning our second decade as a band, we have put together a show at the Flint Local 432 in our hometown of Flint, MI on Friday, August 3rd. Just like the shows back then, this one will be cheap ($7) so we’re calling on all of our friends and fans, old and new, to come out and support not just us and the bands playing, but the Flint music scene. It used to be something tremendous and changed who we were forever. Running the risk of sounding super old.. we want the next generation of show-goers to have what we had.
We’ll be playing songs from every release, and even inviting some ex-band members onstage to help us remember how to play the REALLY old stuff. Probably something you’ve never seen, and will never see again (out of towners, you might want to consider making a road trip!). It’ll be embarrassing and fun as you watch us re-live our growing pains, but a show we’ll never forget as we celebrate how far we’ve all come. Joining us will be Vagabond (young local blood), Midwest (our best pals from home), Pentimento (a great band from Buffalo, NY), and Making Friends, who are sadly calling this show their final show.
We’ll see you in Flint on August 3rd!

Holy cow, we’re beyond excited and privileged to get some fantastic national touring bands in next Tuesday, June 26th!
Headling the show will be Making Friends (feat. Garrett Burgett, who used to play guitar in the Swellers) who is one of our favorite bands in Flint and consists of long-time Flint music veterans. If you never seen them before, you have to get down to this show on Tuesday.
Then, we are extremely privileged to welcome folk-punk juggernauts The Wild, from Atlanta, GA (Asian Man Records, Quote Unquote Records). They are probably one of the best bands in the national scene making music right now, having played shows as big as the Fest in Gainesville and Plan-it-X fest, and they’re coming to play our stage in Flint. How cool is that?
They’re also bringing The Taxpayers from Portland, OR (Asian Man Records, Plan-it-X Records) on tour with them.
Opening the show will be two other local favorites As A Lark, and PleThorA.
You can’t miss this!
Make sure to come out tomorrow night, it’s only $6 and you’ll be supporting some great bands to help keep them doing what their doing. We don’t normally promote shows on Tuesdays, so if you come out to help us cover our expenses for the night, it means more money for the bands. Support local DIY music!
