POZ Showcase: Midwest

propertyofzack:

Midwest have that classic Michigan sound down pat: passionate, raw, and emotive, the Fenton quintet have been tearing up their local scene for a couple years now (albeit under various names). But what has not changed is their commitment to making the most authentic music this side of the Great Lakes. And honestly, their earnestness is irresistible. Go ahead and try to deny them their due…Midwest will keep going without you.

What’s your hometown (or what are your hometowns)?
We say our band is from Fenton, Michigan. Though Zach lives in Howell, Michigan where we currently practice and Josh lives in Holly, Michigan.

How did the band come together? How long has it been?
The band kind of came together from an older band that Nick, Josh and I were a part of. That band eventually went on hiatus and we wanted to bring it back with some new members. Zach and Brian came into the picture (formally from the band Tiger! Tiger!) and we quickly realized that it was nothing like the old band and we gave ourselves a new name and pushed forward. We’ve been playing under this name for a little over a year.

Why should people listen to your band?
Well, I try to write lyrics that a lot of people can relate too. I think that everything works well together, from the melodies of the vocals, to the rhythm of the bass and drums as well as the aggressive melodic guitar work. We’re just trying to play music that we would love to jam to and we hope other people dig it as well.

How have you grown since you started?
I mean, we have all grown individually outside of the band and I think that definitely shows in the composition and maturity of the music that we are writing today.

What sets you apart from other bands in the scene?
That is definitely a tough question, because the area(s) that we have been fortunate enough to grow up in (Flint with the Flint Local 432, Howell with Fusion Shows, etc) have given us great opportunities to play with amazing bands and network. I think that we appreciate everything a lot more than we used to when we were younger. We don’t feel entitled to play certain shows; we’re more thankful than anything.

What’s the best part about being in your band?
Meeting new people without a doubt is one of the best parts of being in our band.

More times than not, influences tend to bleed through. What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
We have a ton of influences, which is not uncommon when we get five guys writing music together, haha. We listen to Polar Bear Club, The Flatliners, A Wilhelm Scream, Stay Ahead of the Weather and many more.

What would you say the band has already accomplished and what do you have your eyes set on next?
I think that we have done a pretty decent job in gaining some momentum in our hometown(s), with the release of Wishful Drinking things have been looking up for us. Even shortly after the release we’ve got our eyes set on writing a full length. Stoked!
